“Pretty Little Liars” Other (Addl posts)

We’ve talked about the recent phenomenon of a lot of YA books being turned into movies. However, there are a few YA books series that have currently been turned into weekly television shows. One popular show entitled “Pretty Little Liars” is a novel series that has been created into a hit tv show on ABC Family. I’ve heard a lot of good reviews about this show and many viewers say that each episode of “Pretty Little Liars” is extremely captivating. Hence, with the recent success of both the book and the television series, I think it would be quite interesting to see how receptive this particular novel would be in a classroom setting. For example, many students complain about books being boring or disinteresting. However, if book clubs were started for shows like this where fans can simultaneously read this novel while watching the tv show on a weekly basis; I think this would be a good way to get high school students to read more actively on texts that they actually like to purchase. As future English teachers, what do you think about this idea of starting “television book clubs”? Is this something that you would consider implementing to motivate your students to read more?- JC
